Solon Corp. will phase out its solar module manufacturing line in Tucson by the end of October as part of a new operations strategy, eliminating 60 local jobs.

Solon, part of Berlin-based Solon SE, said it will keep its U.S. headquarters here with 70 jobs in sales and marketing, engineering, research and product development, project management and finance.

The company said it focus on designing and building utilty and commercial photovoltaic systems and will use existing internal and external sources to provide the most cost-efficient, quality modules for Solon systems and projects.

Solon SE has solar-module manufacturing operations in Germany and Italy. As part of a recent move to restructure overall operations, the parent company said it would look to use low-cost module sources in Asia.

Dan Alcombright, president and CEO of North America for Solon, said the company regretted the impact of the decision on local workers and the community but said the company remains committed to its Tucson operations.

“We will continue to aggressively expand in Tucson and our other U.S. offices to support our efforts on commercial and large-scale project development, supply chain excellence, and new product development,” Alcombright said in a news release.

“We are committed to Tucson and the excellent talent pool that is offered here, and plan to continue to be an active part of the region’s business community from our company headquarters,” he said.
