August is the most popular month to have a baby. Who knew?

There were 362,000 babies born in the United States last August, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, compared with 305,000 in February, the slowest month for births.

And August is generally the top month year over year.

Being nine months pregnant in the heat of a Tucson summer sounds miserable to me. But the high number of births in the summer seems to be due to things heating up at home when the temperatures drop in the winter. At least, that's what the CDC theorizes.

It says seasons and weather conditions have a lot to do with birthdays.

September and October are not too far behind on the popularity scale.

That means many of you are probably going to be shopping soon for baby-shower gifts, or for your own little one.

Babies are expensive. And it's not only the big purchases that'll get you, it's the everyday supplies that really add up.

You know, the constant trips out for diapers, wipes or formula - which, by the way, make awesome gifts for a baby shower. I know they're not as fun as that adorable dress with the matching shoes, but they are definitely appreciated and needed.

So, I thought I'd do a spot check on the prices of a basic list of baby supplies.

I chose the least expensive item at each store, which was often the store brand. You'll notice a dramatic price difference on formula between Buy Buy Baby and all of the other stores. That's because there was no store brand at Buy Buy Baby, and there was at the others. The price listed for Buy Buy Baby is for Similac Advance Infant Formula.

I tried to choose the same size of each item as well. If there was a difference, I adjusted the prices to match the others by figuring out the unit price and multiplying it by the desired quantity.

Prices were recorded Wednesday and are listed regular price first, followed by the club card price when applicable.
