CVS Pharmacy will be the newest addition to more than 20 retailers and 30 restaurants at Main Gate Square near the University of Arizona.
Merchants on the square are excited about the addition, said Jane McCollum, general manager of Main Gate Square.
"Every day, people ask if there is a drugstore nearby," McCollum said. "It's a place people will go to every day - faculty, hotel guests, residents of the neighborhood ... and since it's on the streetcar route, people in other neighborhoods will come, too."
The new 12,000-square-foot store is going in an existing building at 825 E. University Blvd. It will be remodeled, but CVS is not going to do too much to change the look of the outside, McCollum said.
"Because it's going to be in this building that was originally approved by the neighborhood association, it won't look like a cookie cutter store," she said.
CVS will leave existing partial wood floors and wood-faced freezer and refrigerator displays.
It is also going to use old photos from the UA and special collections in the windows. "They want to make it a university and a neighborhood drugstore," McCollum said. "It's going to be a cool store."
The store will employ approximately 20 people, said CVS spokesman Michael DeAngelis.
CVS hopes to be open by the start of school in late summer.
"We're looking at it as an anchor at this end of University Boulevard," McCollum said.
