World Sports Grille boasted many flat-screen TVs and video games when it opened at Tucson Mall in 2008. The restaurant closed Monday. Customers with an unused Groupon may contact the online deals company at for refunds.

World Sports Grille, the cavernous restaurant and game room at Foothills Mall, closed Monday.

Sales and marketing director Sherry Kososkie said the restaurant's parent company, Seattle-based GameWorks, announced the closure Monday morning. She said she could not comment further and referred questions to the manager, Donn Brouhard, who could not be reached for comment.

GameWorks corporate spokesman Dennis Roy, reading from a prepared statement, called it "a tough business decision in a tough economic environment." He could not say how many employees were affected by the closure.

The 15,000-square-foot World Sports Grille, with a large room devoted to video games and flat-screen TVs projecting sporting events throughout the dining rooms and bar, opened in spring 2008 at 7401 N. La Cholla Blvd. It was GameWorks' maiden voyage into the sports bar arena; it has since opened a World Sports Grille near its home base in Seattle and has one set to open in early April in New Hampshire.
