Desert Sky Cinema in Sahuarita has been sold to Regal Entertainment Group as part of the sale of its parent company, Hollywood Theaters.

The Portland, Ore.-based chain was sold for $191 million, and included 43 theaters across the nation, including Desert Sky at 70 W. Duval Mine Road. Regal does not own any other theaters in Arizona.

There are no changes planned for Desert Sky, said Russ Nunley, vice president of marketing and communications for the Regal Entertainment Group.

"It'll be interesting to see," said Kathy Ward, manager of economic development and communications for the town of Sahuarita. "Desert Sky gives the residents a neighborhood theater to utilize."

Ward hopes Regal continues to let community organizations rent out the theater when it isn't in use. "It's an important facility for the community, not just for the films," she said.

"I think it's a good sign that they think making an investment here is good for their business," Ward added.
