"You don't need to spend a lot of money to look like you did" is Lora Jones' philosophy.

Jones has opened a new store, Roxie's Consignment, and will celebrate with a grand opening Saturday.

As the name implies, Roxie's is a secondhand consignment store.

But there's more.

Jones describes her shop as three stores in one, and has names for each part - Roxie's Consignment, Roxie's Plus and Loaned Luxuries.

Roxie's Consignment offers nicer fashionable women's clothing and accessories in sizes 0-14. Some items available are designer brands such as Coach, Guess and Chico's.

Roxie's Plus allows plus-sized women to consign clothes from their own closets, and buy or rent new ones in sizes 14-32.

Being a plus-sized woman herself, Jones said she was forced to spend a lot on clothes, which meant having fewer outfits, because nice plus-sized clothing is so expensive at retail stores.

"There is no real place to go for plus-sized trading," she said.

As business picks up, Jones also plans to offer new plus-sized clothing lines.

As an added feature, Jones offers free one-hour consulting sessions for her plus-sized customers. "A lot of times people don't know how to dress for their bodies," Jones said. "We have so many different shapes."

While her passion is in the plus-sized area, her fashion advice is not reserved for those shoppers.

She will give ideas to anyone who asks. "I like to get people thinking along different lines than 'I wear blue, gray and black,' " she said. One simple recommendation is to add a "pop of color," like a chunky bracelet or big earrings.

The third part of Roxie's is its Loaned Luxuries, which offers customers the opportunity to rent luxury, designer and formalwear. Wedding, cocktail and prom dresses of all styles and sizes are available to rent.

"I just think that in this economy, people should consider renting," Jones said. "Men rent their tuxes. Why can't women rent a dress?"

Jones says she can't fathom why people would buy a dress they are going to wear only once when they can rent one for a fraction of the cost. "I have adorable stuff," she said. "Nobody needs to know it's rented."

The cost to rent formalwear varies depending on the items, but Jones said it would be about a third of what one might pay retail.

"You can rent the dress, the shoes, the jewelry … the whole look," she said.

When customers bring items in to consign with Jones, they have the option of making money by renting the items as well.

If the consignor chooses this option, the items' price tag will have two separate prices - one for rental, and one for purchase.

Jones splits the money from the sale or rental 50-50, and does not charge a per-item or tagging fee.

Roxie's is also looking to consign local art, jewelry and clothing design.
