Gas prices down again, could keep dropping

Gas prices slipped for the third consecutive week, and they could fall more ahead of Labor Day barring major hurricanes or refinery shutdowns, AAA Arizona said.

The statewide average price for regular gas fell nearly a nickel in the past week, to $3.46 per gallon on Friday. Nationally, prices fell about 4 cents, to $3.54 per gallon.

Tucson continued to offer the lowest average price among surveyed metro areas in the state, at $3.32 per gallon of regular on Friday, down about 4 cents in a week. Flagstaff had the state’s highest gas prices, at $3.72 per gallon on Friday.

Gilbert man gets 3 yrs.

in classic-car fraud

PHOENIX — A Gilbert businessman will spend more than three years in prison for bilking customers of his classic-car sales company.

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office announced Friday that Stanley Dean Torgerson, 67, was also ordered by a judge to pay $1.5 million in restitution to his victims.

Prosecutors say Torgerson sold vehicles through International Classic Auctions but pocketed the money and never delivered the cars. He had been in business since 1989 but was accused of skimming sales proceeds and not delivering cars beginning in 2009.

Torgerson pleaded guilty to three counts of fraudulent schemes and one of theft in a June plea agreement.

He tried to blame employees for embezzling the money.
