Former Tucson Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords will serve as honorary chairwoman and national advocate for the Hiring Our Heroes Military Spouse Employment Advisory Council.

“As the wife of Navy Capt. Mark Kelly (retired) and the 2011 Honorary Military Spouse of the Year by Military Spouse magazine, we hope Gabby will be an inspiration to thousands of military spouses in their search for meaningful employment,” the program announced Friday on its Facebook page.

Hiring Our Heroes is a program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

“While members of the military put on the uniform, they are not the only ones who serve. I’m proud to join hands with military spouses to help them put their unique skills to work in their communities,” Giffords said in a video message about the announcement.

Hiring Our Heroes was launched in March 2011 to help veterans and military spouses find meaningful employment. It has hosted more than 640 hiring fairs in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, helping 21,600 veterans and military spouses find jobs, the program said in a news release.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation is a 501c(3) nonprofit affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
