Construction is progressing at Casas Adobes Plaza on the new 32,000-square-foot Whole Foods, which is due to open early next year.

The exterior walls will be completed in the next couple of weeks, and then the roof will go on before work begins on interior finishes, said Richard Shenkarow, co-owner of the plaza at Ina and Oracle roads.

Those exterior walls, by the way, are 3 feet thick, with adobe and brick on top of cement block, so the supermarket will fit in with the Spanish Colonial architecture of the longstanding plaza.

The contractor is Arizona-based D.L. Withers Construction, and all fabrication work is being done in Tucson, said Shenkarow.

Other tenants remain open at the plaza, at 7133 N. Oracle Road, during construction.

As part of the project, the plaza’s Starbucks has already moved into a new adobe built for it on the shopping center’s west side.
