Kevin Jewelers’ Park Place and Tucson Mall locations will close in March and April, said Alex Quezada, manager of the Park Place store.

After 13 years of buying and selling jewelry in the Tucson market, Kevin Jewelers is closing its doors at Park Place and Tucson Mall.

The store’s lease was up, said Alex Quezada, manager of Kevin Jewelers at Park Place, and despite attempts to negotiate new terms with mall officials, its space will soon be occupied by a larger Victoria’s Secret.

The popular lingerie store is planning for “a massive expansion, which will include the space currently occupied by Kevin Jewelers,” said Brighid Brown, marketing manager for Tucson and Park Place malls.

The expansion also includes spaces that were occupied by Game Days and Planet Haircare, Brown added.

Since Kevin Jewelers is a mall-based store, the company couldn’t figure out a way to stay in the market, Quezada said. “It didn’t make sense to keep one location open and not the other. ... I think it’s part of the agreement — if one left, the other leaves as well.”

The jewelry store is in the process of liquidating its inventory with steep discounts of up to 80 percent off. “If there are reasonable offers, those are being accepted, too,” Quezada said. “They really want to liquidate as much as they can because it costs a lot to ship.”

Kevin Jewelers will continue to buy gold until the stores close. Gold purchased goes to its home office and then a refinery.

The Park Place store, which opened in 2001, will close after business March 30. Its Tucson Mall location will remain open for a couple weeks after that, Quezada said.

“Kevin always wanted to stay in Arizona, and they did what they could to be able to do that,” Quezada said. “It’s unfortunate, because we’ve been here for so long.”
