Cress named interim director of UA Cancer Center

Anne E. Cress, professor of cellular and molecular medicine and radiation oncology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson, has been named interim director of the University of Arizona Cancer Center.

Cress, who also is deputy dean for research affairs at the UA College of Medicine-Tucson, succeeds Dr. David S. Alberts, who served as cancer center director for more than eight years until his recent retirement. Alberts remains at the UA Cancer Center to conduct research.

Cress was named a research associate in 1980 and became a research assistant professor in 1981, both in the UA's Division of Radiation Oncology. She was named an associate professor in 1990 and attained full tenured professorship in 1996. She has been a Cancer Center member since 1987.

Cress also served as the College of Medicine's associate dean for research and academic affairs for six years.

Her research, which has been supported by federal and American Cancer Society grants since 1981, is focused on stopping tumor cells and preventing them from spreading throughout the body.

Cress received her bachelor of science in microbiology/chemistry and a doctorate in biochemistry/molecular biology from the UA.

Westin La Paloma appoints Sampert as general manager

The Westin La Paloma Resort and Spa has named Glenn Sampert general manager.

Sampert previously served as the general manager of the Sheraton Nassau Beach Resort and Casino, a 694-room property in Nassau, Bahamas.

A native of Vancouver, British Columbia, he has been a member of the Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide team since 1998, including roles at the Westin Los Angeles Airport, The Westin Maui Resort and Spa, and the Sheraton Hamilton Hotel in Ontario, Canada, after beginning his career at the Sutton Place Hotel in Vancouver.

Bokhari, Harding join Go Web Solutions

Go Web Solutions has hired Jameel Bokhari as web design project manager and Stacey Harding as marketing and sales specialist.

Bokhari will be responsible for Web design, graphic design and project coordination, focusing mainly on Wordpress website development. He previously worked at Adam D Technologies, and he also owned his own business.

Harding is responsible for selling products and services, as well as managing the social media and internet marketing. She formerly was a sales executive for the Arizona Daily Star and has more than 20 years of marketing and advertising experience.

Cicala returns to KVOA as sports director

Paul Cicala has been named sports director for KVOA-TV/News 4 Tucson (NBC), starting Aug. 19. Cicala joins KVOA from KVIA-TV (ABC) in El Paso, Texas. Cicala had previously worked in Tucson for KVOA and for KOLD-TV.

Prior to working in El Paso and Tucson, Cicala also worked for Fox Network Sports in Hollywood, NBC Network News in Burbank, Calif., and ABC affiliates in Palm Springs, Calif., and Las Vegas.
