Maureen O'Nell joined the Humane Society of Southern Arizona as chief executive officer.

O'Nell was executive director of the Alaska Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Anchorage, which was the only statewide animal welfare agency.

She was a leader in the interstate rescue of 29 wolf-hybrid dogs, "getting animals off chains and into sanctuary life," the Humane Society of Southern Arizona said in a news release.

She holds a master's degree in policy and has more than 20 years' experience in nonprofit leadership.
