Fireworks brighten the skies around the pool area at Friday's grand opening of the Casino del Sol Resort, Spa and Conference Center. The $130 million expansion includes a 215-room hotel and 65,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting and convention space.

The Casino Del Sol Resort, Spa and Conference Center has been given AAA’s prestigious Four Diamond Award, joining six other local resorts and hotels.

The resort opened in November as part of a $130 million expansion of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe’s Casino del Sol at 5655 W. Valencia Road.

Casino del Sol earned the travel rating after an anonymous visit and inspection by AAA, the travel club said. On average, AAA says its inspectors evaluate nearly 900 hotels and restaurants per year in Arizona.

With the addition of Casino Del Sol, there are now 42 properties in Arizona that boast the Four Diamond rating, including seven in Tucson.

Loews Ventana Canyon Resort has held the four-star designation for 27 years. The other local AAA Four Diamond properties are The Lodge at Ventana Canyon (16 years); the Westin La Paloma Resort & Spa (10 years); Arizona Inn (eight years); the Omni Tucson National Resort (three years); and the Westward Look Wyndham Grand Resort & Spa (three years).

Five Arizona resort hotels hold AAA’s top Five Diamond rating, all in Scottsdale.
