SW Eye Center buys Eye Institute

Mesa-based Southwestern Eye Center has acquired Eye Institute of Southern Arizona in Tucson and Green Valley.

The Eye Institute of Southern Arizona has been in business in the Tucson area since 1977.

Its doctors and their practices will now operate as Southwestern Eye Center, "but changes in the day-to-day operations will be very subtle," the eye center said in a news release Tuesday.

Drs. Jeffrey Katz and Barry Kusman join Southwestern Eye Center's team as cataract surgeons.

Hospital's helicopter fills in for DPS

FLAGSTAFF - Flagstaff Medical Center's air arm is stepping in to help with search and rescue missions in Northern Arizona at a time when the state Department of Public Safety's Flagstaff-based helicopter is grounded much of the time due to budget constraints.

Recent search and rescue missions flown by Guardian Air included when a parachutist was killed near the confluence of the Colorado and Little Colorado rivers.

Another recent mission delivered search-and-rescue personnel into Meteor Crater when a man climbed a fence and jumped into a mine shaft, The Arizona Daily Sun reported.

DPS' Flagstaff-based helicopter alternates being operational with the DPS helicopter based in Kingman, approximately 150 miles to the west. Likewise, DPS helicopters in Phoenix and Tucson take turns being operational in Southern Arizona.
