Locally owned outdoor retailer Summit Hut is transferring its Wetmore location to 7745 N. Oracle Road, opening its new doors at 9 a.m. today.
The location at 605 E. Wetmore Road closed permanently at 5 p.m. Sunday
The new, 9,500-square-foot Oro Valley store features a climbing demonstration wall with footholds, handholds and a top-rope-belay system, said Summit Hut's spokesman Landon Vincent.
The wall will allow customers to test climbing shoes and harnesses in action, to ensure proper fit.
There will also be a large photo wall for customers to post images of their outdoor adventures.
"We're really excited by how beautiful the new space is," Vincent said. "Starting with a new canvas has allowed us to create a look and feel that we think will lead to a great experience for our customers."
Local geographic attractions such as Pusch Ridge have been incorporated into many of the store's design elements.
Summit Hut also encourages its employees to get involved by using their photography throughout the store.
Although Summit Hut has been a mainstay in Tucson for more than 40 years, competition from the national chain REI did cause a change to its business, said Summit Hut's co-owner, Jeremy Davis.
But, he said, due to Summit Hut's price-matching policies, knowledgeable staff and community involvement, the store has "come through that time smarter and as strong as ever."
Summit Hut's new store will have a three-day grand opening celebration starting Thursday, July 4.
The first 100 customers to show up Thursday will receive a free Marmot Kompressor Backpack.
Check Summit Hut's website at summithut.com for a schedule of grand opening events.
