Customers of Shaffer Dry Cleaning and Laundry can now also drop off their shoes, handbags, or leather garments for cleaning and repairs along with their clothing items.
Owner Bake Shaffer said his company is striving to become a full-service cleaner, even for odds and ends.
Along with the help of Alpine Boot and Shoe Repair, Shaffer Dry Cleaning can now take care of simple shoeshine and repair, linen cleaning and leather care.
Customers can drop off items at any of the 10 Shaffer locations in Tucson. The company then sends all the items to its 7402 E. Broadway location for repairs.
Bob Lange, owner of Alpine Shoe and Boot Repair, has been in the business of handbag, shoe, boots, belts and leather repairs for 15 years. His original shop was on Speedway, but he recently relocated to next to Shaffer Dry Cleaning and Laundry at 7402 E. Broadway. Thus, the combination of services was created.
A special process goes into cleaning leathers by hand. Essential oils are replenished in the leather to remove scuffs and stains. Also, recoloring of leathers is available.
Sheepskin boots and slippers made by UGG or similar brands can also be specially cleaned and restored.
Prices of mending depend on the type of item brought in, and the condition of the item, Lange said.
Lange says the shoe repair and dry cleaning businesses go hand-in-hand. The combination of services, or as he called it, "cooperative partnership," has helped both his and Shaffer's business increase.
Several other Tucson dry cleaning companies offer extra services, too.
Among them, Sparkle Cleaners, with many Tucson locations, offers alterations from Mendel's Wife the Tailor, button replacement, leather and suede cleaning.
Thomas Dry Cleaners at 6767 E. Tanque Verde Road also offers alterations and tailoring, and purse, leather and suede cleaning.
