It seems the image of a pregnant Jessica Simpson, with one hand covering an exposed breast and another wrapped around her nude belly, is too risqué for some customers at a Tucson Safeway.
The April edition of Elle magazine features the photo of the singer/actress/fashion designer on its cover.
And that started rubbing customers - especially those with children - the wrong way, even though it's been more than 20 years since actress Demi Moore struck the same pose on a famed Vanity Fair cover in 1991.
The manager at the Safeway on East Tanque Verde Road near Catalina Highway received "multiple complaints" about the Simpson cover, said Nancy Keane, a Safeway spokeswoman. So the image was covered with cardboard to block any parts that may be offensive, she said.
"Our managers are very quick to respond to our customers," Keane said.
A walk through the store Thursday afternoon didn't reveal any bits of cardboard shrouding Simpson's image. But the nude image, tucked into magazine racks in the store's checkstands, still wasn't easy to spot.
The magazines had been turned around.
A manager at the store would not comment, referring any questions to Keane.
Keane said she hadn't heard of significant complaints about the magazine cover at any other Safeway locations.
Apparently, customers at a Safeway just down the street in Tucson aren't too bothered by it, as the image of the pregnant Simpson was exposed Thursday for all to see.
