While Arizona's biggest metro area did not keep pace with comparable markets in exports last year, Tucson was a bright spot.

Exporters in the Tucson area saw significant growth in all major industries in 2012 and totaled $2.5 billion, with the biggest increases in fabricated metal, computer and electronic products manufacturing.

Coming in 30th place, Phoenix had fewer exports than Houston, Philadelphia and Salt Lake City, recently released statistics show. Exports fell in three major manufacturing sectors and showed growth only in transportation equipment with a $153 million increase over 2011.

"In 2012, U.S. companies reached an all-time record of $2.2 trillion in good and services exports, supporting nearly 10 million jobs," Francisco Sanchez, undersecretary of commerce for international trade, said in a statement. "Metropolitan areas across the country play a key role in strengthening our economy and continuing the growth of our exports."
