Sauce Pizza & Wine is celebrating first responders and the military.

On Mondays through year’s end, active military, police officers and firefighters can get 20 percent off by showing their ID or coming in the restaurant in uniform.

The restaurant, with four Tucson locations, is calling it “Mondays Are for Heroes” and the offer is good for dine-in or takeout, food only; alcohol and gift-card purchases are excluded.

Also eligible for the heroes discount: active EMTs, military reservists and retired military personnel.

Sauce is at 6450 E. Grant Road; 2990 N. Campbell Ave.; 5285 E. Broadway; and 7117 N. Oracle Road. Details: saucepizzaandwine.com

Wings flying into spot vacated by BZ’s

Wings Over Broadway is opening a second location as early as mid-July in the just-closed BZ’s Pizza Co. Neighborhood Grill at 8838 E. Broadway.

BZ’s closed last Friday after a three-year run marked by financial ups and downs after the Safeway store that anchored the corner of East Broadway and South Camino Seco closed 18 months ago.

Wings Over Broadway — fondly referred to as WOB by its legions of fans — is one of Tucson’s oldest buffalo-wing restaurants. It’s been around since 1999, serving up cold beer with its hot wings and a full menu of burgers, sandwiches and smothered fries.

The new location is about 3½ miles from the original WOB at 5004 E. Broadway. Owner JJ Esquibel bought that restaurant 10 years ago.

Esquibel said he is hiring for all positions in the kitchen and front of house. In a Facebook posting, he said applications are being accepted at the original location.

Desert Diamond has
a tasty challenge

Apparently Desert Diamond Casino is looking for the best chorizo and Sonoran hot dogs in Tucson.

The casino at 1100 W. Pima Mine Road on Saturday, June 24, is hosting its second annual Chorizo and Sonoran Hot Dog Challenge. Competitors are vying not only for bragging rights — which, frankly, are priceless — but cash prizes of $300 to $1,000.

The event is from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday and it’s free. You can sample the entries and they’ll have drink specials and live entertainment. Details: ddcaz.com/sahuarita/entertainment
