The Tucson Unified School District closed University Heights Elementary School in 1978 as part of a desegregation settlement in U.S. District Court. A two-year study was conducted by TUSD on the best way to use the property, but members of the area's neighborhood association protested several of the proposals. The campus, at 1201 N. Park Ave., was converted into apartments years later.
