Dragonboat Festival

Ethan Knoepfle, center, 9, celebrates after his boat won the championship match during the Tucson Chinese Association's 2013 Dragonboat Festival on Saturday, June 15, 2013, at the Tucson Chinese Cultural Center, 1288 W. River Road. Kids squared off with balloon-propelled dragon boat races, while everyone dined on Asian-style hot dogs, Chinese tamales and Zongzi (sticky rice stuffed with meat and wrapped in bamboo). The annual festival commemorates the drowning death of patriotic poet Qu Yuan, when more than 2,000 years ago the Chinese people raced in boats to rescue the poet, scattering food in the river so he wouldn't go hungry.
