The fabulous fugue is star of Sunday concert
The popular Phoenix Chamber Brass heads south this weekend to perform a St. Philip's Friends of Music summer concert.
The quartet will explore the fugue - music that builds on one theme, introduced by an instrument, and then picked up as other instruments join in and repeat the theme, shorten it or play it backward. Not easy to play, but glorious to listen to.
J.S. Bach was a master of the fugue, and three of his works are on the program- Contrapunctus No. 1, No. 7, and No. 9, all of which use the same fugue theme. Also slated for the program are Eric Ewazen's "Frostfire" and Ingolf Dahl's "Music for Brass Instruments."
The concert is at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Philip's in the Hills Episcopal Church, 4440 N. Campbell Ave. A $15 donation is suggested. 299-6421.
