Artist Chris Leon partnered with some local rescue groups and drew pictures of dogs for adoption at last year's festival.

Chalk this one up to a fun time.

The annual Chalk Art Festival is this weekend at Park Place.

This means seeing lots of artists in action as they create images in chalk on the walkways of the mall.

And it means you can join in and create your own chalk art, too. The professional artists - folks like Matt Cotton, Michael Schwartz and Martin Quintanilla - will each create an 8-by-6-foot image inspired by assigned themes, such as desert landscapes, natural history and space.

The mural you may get a chance to work on is called the Community Participation Mural and will be a massive piece following a common theme.

There's even a Kidzone for kids 3 to 12. They get their own space to make their own murals.

It's happening from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Park Place, 5870 E. Broadway. And it's free.
