The Tucson Jazz Institute's Ellington band returned to New York City last weekend for the 2012 Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival.
And, as it did at the 2010 festival, the ensemble brought home the trophy for Best Community Band.
It will celebrate the feat at its "End of Year/Mother's Day Concert" at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Temple of Music and Art, 330 S. Scott Ave.
Several TJI students also received individual awards in the New York competition. Max Goldschmid won Outstanding Multi-Instrumentalist, and Grant Cherry took home Outstanding Piano honors. The brass section also was at the top of the list.
In addition, the Ellington band took home Best Community Big Band honors at the Monterey Next Generation Jazz festival in California in early April. The honor earns the band a spot in the Monterey Jazz Festival in September.
Tickets for Saturday's concert are $20, $15 for students and seniors, and free for kids 11 and younger. Order online at tucsoncommunitymusicschool.com
