One of the most engaging and entertaining concert series of the summer is taking place at an elevation of more than 8,000 feet.

Music on the Mountain, the live music showcase held weekly in Summerhaven on Mount Lemmon, returned Saturday after taking last summer off.

The series, which showcases local acts in the mountain village setting, continues with the same mission.

"The goal is to show people that Mount Lemmon is still Tucson's playground," said developer Jim Campbell who came up with the idea of Music on the Mountain with Bob Zimmerman, owner of Mount Lemmon Realty. "It is unbelievable how many people still haven't been up there since the (2003 Aspen) Fire."

Campbell said he and Zimmerman took a break in 2012 to help Gabriel Greenberg get the Sawmill Run restaurant, located in the heart of Summerhaven, off of the ground.

The biggest change, now that the music is back, is its move from Sundays to Saturdays.

"It seemed like a better fit," Campbell said. "Sundays were tough. Having it on Saturday gives people the opportunity to stay later or even spend the night."

Chuck Maultsby of Chuck Wagon & The Wheelchairs has filled the void left behind by local concert promoter Bonnie Vining, who organized the first three seasons of Music on the Mountain before retiring.

Campbell said the weekly concerts have developed a loyal following over the years.

"People were disappointed that we didn't have it last year," he said. "This should be a fun summer."

Concerts run from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturdays
