Rather that highlighting a specific dance today, we're celebrating National Dance Day, which is Saturday.
Whether you dance at clubs, social events like weddings, gym or studio (think Zumba and Jazzercise) or around your house, Saturday is all about getting up and moving.
National Dance Day was initiated by “So You Think You Can Dance” co-creator and Dizzy Feet Foundation co-president Nigel Lythgoe "to raise awareness about and encourage Americans to embrace dance as a fun and positive way to maintain good health and combat obesity," according to National Day Calendar.
The dance got its day in 2010, when proponent of healthy lifestyles, U.S. Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-District of Columbia, introduced a National Dance Day resolution to promote dance education and physical fitness, according to National Day Calendar.
The Dizzy Feet Foundation website has some more info on the day and some dance routines anyone can try — even if you are tool cool to dance or want to stay seated.
To celebrate National Dance Day, we've posted three of our favorite dance scenes from movies: Gene Kelly, who is singing and dancing in the rain, Jennifer Grey (check out the height of her heels) and Patrick Swayze having the time of their lives, and, of course, Tom Cruise loving some ol' time rock 'n roll in his tidy whities.
