For 30 years the smell of garlic and fresh-baked pizza pies has enveloped the plaza at North Oracle and West Magee roads.

But on April 28, that will end when La Madrina Pizza and Pasta closes its doors. The owner says he can no longer keep up with increased operating costs including recent hikes in the minimum wage.

Brandon O’Leary, who has owned the restaurant for nine years, said he has been “ operating in the red for the last 10 months.”

La Madrina opened in 1985, two years after the 50-seat space was christened an Italian eatery by Damiani’s, O’Leary said. The restaurant has a loyal neighborhood following, with many regulars going back to the early days, he said.

La Madrina will be open at least through April 28. Hours: 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, until 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and from noon to 8 p.m. Sundays.
