Country music star Randy Travis was awake and interacting with his family and friends in a Texas hospital early this week after undergoing surgery following a stroke.

His doctors, in a news release, said the 54-year-old singer is recovering but remains in critical condition and on a ventilator. He is no longer using a heart pump and is breathing spontaneously.

Travis's fiance, Mary Davis, said Travis appreciates the support from fans.

“He feels the hands of the doctors and the care of the nurses and the love of his fans. His friends and family have all been touched by that," Davis said in a written release. "He is responding well to voices and he sees and he understands. He’s miles beyond where any of us thought he would be a few days ago.”

Travis, whose people last week canceled his August show at Fox Tucson Theatre, will stay at The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano for two to three more weeks before being transferred somewhere else to undergo aggressive physical therapy.

Meanwhile, the Associated Press is reporting that Travis's brother, David Traywick, has been arrested in Union County, North Carolina, after sheriff’s deputies found a methamphetamine lab inside his home.

Investigators with the sheriff’s office searched the home of 50-year-old Traywick Tuesday and said they found a working meth lab.

Deputies arrested Traywick, his wife, Jessica, and two other women, charging them with conspiracy to traffic meth. David and Jessica Traywick were jailed under a $500,000 bond apiece and were scheduled to appear in court today. It couldn’t be determined if either person has an attorney.

Last September, deputies arrested Traywick for allegedly cooking meth in a makeshift lab near his home in Marshville.
