In honor of National Doughnut Day Friday, PETA — People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals — has compiled a list of vegan-friendly doughnut makers.

It’s a pretty elite group of bakers, folks who don’t use eggs or dairy in their treats; only six from throughout the United States made the cut. Anchoring the lis: South Tucson’s Le Cave’s Bakery.

It makes sense: Le Cave’s recipe for its swoonable doughnuts has never called for eggs or dairy — with the exception of two cream-filled doughnuts. That’s pretty commendable, particularly given that Le Cave’s has been making its doughnuts this way since opening in 1935. Talk about being ahead of the curve.

Le Cave’s, 1219 S. Sixth Ave., will get a certificate to hang in the store. The shop is open from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sundays.
