You’ve got your book written, your poetry polished.

Now what?

Our recommendation: enter it into the 2014 Tucson Festival of Books Literary Awards. But do it soon: the deadline is Oct. 31.

The awards are for fiction, nonfiction and poetry. First-place winners in each category will pocket $1,000. Second-place in each will receive $500, and $250 goes to the third place winners.

In addition, all winners will receive scholarships to the Festival’s Masters Workshop on the University of Arizona campus.

And you want to attend that workshop. It will be led by some of the authors invited to the festival. This year, that includes Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Rae Armantrout; Peter Turchi, who has five books to his credit, as well as fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation; and Kevin Canty, who has had five novels published, as well as three short story collections.

The workshop will be held on March 17-18, following the festival, which is March 15-16 on the UA campus.

There are guidelines for submissions, of course — you can only submit one entry per category; stories for children or young adults, academic books, or how-to nonfiction will not be accepted; there’s a $20 entry fee; the maximum length for prose is 5,000 words, and the submissions must be unpublished.
