“Lena Joins the Team,” originally published as a 13-part serial in the Arizona Daily Star in 2002, is now available as an e-book in Kindle and Nook formats.

“Lena” is the fictional account of the Cougars, a Tucson soccer team of 10-year-old boys and girls, who learn to work and play together on and off the soccer field.

The serial, written with third- and fourth-grade readers in mind, ran for 13 consecutive days in the Star’s features section. The intent was for the story to be read and discussed every day at homes and in classrooms.

The Star’s food and features sections ran stories on baking polvorones (Mexican wedding cookies) and making papel picado that augmented the serial.

The Star offers this e-book to introduce other generations of young readers to the Cougars. The e-book includes the serial chapters and the accompanying articles.

“Lena” joins the award-winning “Mama’s Santos: An Arizona Life,” a collection of news coverage on the Pioneer Hotel fire and “Bad Girls,” tales of Arizona’s notorious female criminals on the Star’s e-book shelf. Find links to the books on the Kindle and Nook stores at azstarnet.com/ebooks
