A new restaurant that will blend different styles of traditional Asian cuisine with Southwestern and Southern California influences is set to open on North Campbell Avenue.
Umi Star (Umi means "sea" in Japanese) will feature unique dishes, including Japanese ceviche and Bánh mì hot dogs, in addition to a selection of street tacos, nigiri, sashimi and sushi rolls.
The concept of the restaurant, located in the Campbell Avenue Shops, just north of East Grant Road, is to provide "a little bit of Asian street food with our own perspective on it," said owner Jason Anderson.
Anderson is the architect who helped create spaces for Union Public House and the Tucson branch of the Phoenix-based Cartel Coffee Lab chain.
He said he chose the location at 2502 N. Campbell Ave. in part because of its proximity to the University of Arizona.
"It provides a platform for a lot of people to come together and eat and drink," he said. "I think we need to get more social spaces in areas like that."
Anderson, who is partnering with executive chef Todd Hammerslag on the venture, hopes that the restaurant will help bring new life to the North Campbell corridor.
He plans on opening within the next few weeks.
"There are a lot of restaurants redeveloping and opening right now," he said. "Downtown is finally getting there. It is kind of exciting to be part of that movement in Tucson."
