For the first time ever in the Caliente food bracket, we had a tie. So we took it to OT.

Trident Grill, 2033 E. Speedway, and Sullivan’s Eatery & Creamery, 6444 N. Oracle Road, finished Round 16 of Caliente’s Burger Madness in a dead heat, each drawing 337 votes.

To break the tie we put the matchup on Facebook for a “like” vote on Tuesday. The contest was close throughout the day until Trident Grill pulled ahead to advance, winning 507-482.

There were a lot of claims made in the comments about the high quality of the burgers, staff and um, other virtues of both restaurants.

“The bar is forged from pure gold and unicorns roam the floor constantly. I can say in all honesty that I have yet to see a unicorn in Sullivan’s ....... just sayin …” posted Ed Slocum on Trident’s burger photo.

Trident will face Amigos Burgers and Beer, a newcomer at 6372 S. Nogales Hwy. Amigos eliminated Omar’s Hi-Way Chef, Tucson’s Triple T truck stop at 5451 E. Benson Hwy.

The matchup between Grumpy’s Grill, 2960 W. Ina Road, and Surly Wench Pub, 424 N. Fourth Ave., almost needed a tie breaker too, but Grumpy’s pulled out the win by a single vote, 397-396. The northwest-side eatery will face University Boulevard favorite Gentle Ben’s, which beat Red Garter Bar & Grill, 3143 E. Speedway, 399-378.

Fini’s Landing, a seafood restaurant at 5689 N. Swan Road in the Catalina Foothills, took out giant-killer Cody’s Beef ‘n Beans, 2708 E. Fort Lowell Road, which upset overall No. 1 seed Zinburger last week.

Fini’s faces Frank’s Sports Grill & Bar, 7930 E. Speedway, home of the holiday-appropriate “Frankenburger Challenge,” where customers have to eat six half-pound patties with all the works, a pound of fries and a whole pickle in 40 minutes.

Monkey Burger, 5350 E. Broadway — still the only surviving No.-1-seed (based on the restaurants’ number of nominations)— beat Kenney D’s to advance to the El-Eat Eight. Monkey Burger will face Zivaz, 4590 E. Broadway, which beat the west-side Rusty’s Family Restaurant & Sports Grill.
