A long-standing Oro Valley Italian restaurant is making its foray into Tucson's Foothills this summer.

Caffe Torino in the Foothills could open by late May or early June in the former Ric's Cafe spot in River Center Plaza, 5605 E. River Road, said owner Daniela Borella.

"I had lots of positive response from everybody I talked to, and everybody seems to be excited," Borella said. Her family has been serving authentic northern Italian cuisine since the turn of this century from its Caffe Torino restaurant in Oro Valley.

Borella said she is investing about $200,000 to remodel the space, including installing inside-out doors that will allow the restaurant to spill out onto the patio. Landlord George Larsen of Larsen Baker said the improvements will open up the restaurant.

"I have a very good feel for the place. It's a beautiful plaza," Borella said.

Borella said the new restaurant will open daily for lunch and dinner and will offer a happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m. There will be live entertainment on Fridays and Saturdays and brunch on Saturdays and Sundays.

Ric's Cafe, which had operated in the River Road plaza since the 1990s, closed in January.

Caffe Torino in the Foothills joins River Center Plaza's other restaurants, which include longtime tenant Mina's Thai Restaurant and Skybox Restaurant and Bar. Whole Foods opened in January.
