Daglio's is done; victim of high operating costs

When it became clear that Daglio's Cheesesteaks & Hoagies was going to shut down after five years, owner Chuck Stopani went home to break the news to his wife. He got back to the east-side restaurant about 10 p.m. and told his employees and lingering customers.

Within 15 to 20 minutes, word got around and Daglio's was packed.

"It was very humbling and I pretty much was in awe," said Stopani, a longtime restaurateur who previously ran Stopani's, an Italian-American restaurant, on 22nd Street. "It sort of made the decision a little tougher but at the same time, I couldn't have been happier that over 100 people showed up. They were telling me their stories - there were some people, we'd had their engagement parties at Stopani's on 22nd. It was a neat thing that we had going in Tucson between Stopani's and Daglio's."

High operating costs - from minimum wage and tax increases to the cost of importing food from the East Coast - took their toll, and the eatery's last day of business was March 21, Stopani said.

"You can't get the public just anything; we took pride in what we made," he said.

Stopani and Frank Santos opened the original Daglio's in 2004 on North Campbell Avenue. He sold his half of that venture to Santos and opened the eastside Daglio's, 250 N. Pantano Road, in 2008. Santos opened Frankie's South Philly Cheesesteaks in a different Campbell Avenue location in 2007.

The father of two, Stopani - who's logged 20 years in the restaurant biz - isn't sure about his next move aside from spending more time with his wife and kids.

Saguaro Corners Ice House now open

After a three-month, $500,000 renovation, Saguaro Corners reopened on Monday as the Saguaro Corners Ice House.

The restaurant and bar at 3750 S. Old Spanish Trail is serving a Latin-inspired menu of tacos and tapas, with dishes representing Mexico and Central and South America, said chef-owner Gabe Greenberg.

Greenberg is partners in the venture with Mesquite Homes builder Jim Campbell, who also owns Sawmill Run Restaurant on Mount Lemmon. Greenberg is his chef at that restaurant.

The original Saguaro Corners was open for 50 years before Campbell bought the building and closed the restaurant in 2008. At the time, he vowed he would eventually open a restaurant there.

Greenberg said among the renovations was expanding the patio and installing garage doors leading to the bar area. Campbell said they also installed a neon sign.

Saguaro Corners is open daily at 3 p.m.; when it begins its regular hours, it will open daily at 11 a.m. Details: 886-2020.
