Nearly a year after a flood destroyed his University of Arizona-area Greek restaurant, George Markou has finally started rebuilding.

The Tucson restaurateur broke ground on the renovation of his former Fat Greek, 994 E. University Blvd. Markou said he is completely gutting the restaurant, installing new flooring and plumbing to bring the restaurant up to code. He hopes to reopen it as Pelio Grill Greek Taverna & Catering by late September or early October.

Markou said the job is made more difficult because he must do most of the construction during off-hours, when area businesses are closed.

Markou had hoped to reopen the restaurant last spring, but was delayed as he wrangled over the insurance payout for the flood damage.

Markou opened Fat Greek in 2003. In 2010, he opened a sister restaurant, Greek Taverna, on the eastside. He closed that restaurant in January.

He is naming Pelio after the Greek village where he spent his childhood before moving to Tucson when he was in high school in 1984.
