Arizona Hops & Vines
releasing ‘The Lobbyist’ at Speakeasy event
Sisters Shannon Zouzoulas and Megan Halle know how to thank a person.
On Saturday during their aptly named Speakeasy event, the sisters will uncork the newest arrival to their Arizona Hops & Vine arsenal, the Lobbyist. They describe it as “a peppery, bold red zinfandel that celebrates the audacity to affect change.”
They created it to honor Phoenix lobbyists Mark Barnes and Sabrina Vasquez. The two helped the sisters convince state lawmakers last year to change the law banning the marriage of brewing beer and making wine under one roof.
Arizona Hops & Vines also will release its petite syrah, called Gracias.
“This is my favorite event. It’s really small and it’s so fun because everyone dresses up,” Zouzoulas said. “We have dancing. I just love it. I feel like it’s intimate and it’s all my favorite customers.’ ”
Tucson’s Outlaw Rebels will perform, and there will be a vintage car show featuring Model T’s. Guests are encouraged to dress up in 1920s period costumes.
The Speakeasy runs from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday at the winery, 3450 Highway 82 in Sonoita. The cost is $25, which includes a souvenir glass. But to get in, you have to have a password — just as they did to get into illegal drinking clubs during the Prohibition era. It’s available at the winery’s Facebook page (facebook.com/azhopsandvines). We would cheat and give it to you now, but that wouldn’t be any fun.
Hotel Congress’ cocktail benefits women’s group
Hotel Congress’ Cup Cafe restaurant has created a cocktail to help support the Women’s Foundation of Southern Arizona.
“La Feminista” — a blend of Tito’s Handmade Vodka, St. Germain Liqueur and ginger beer — made its debut at a tasting Friday. It’s available in all of the bars and the hotel’s Cup Cafe, 311 E. Congress St., for $10. A portion of each one sold now through Dec. 31 will go to the Women’s Foundation of Southern Arizona.
Hotel Congress General Manager Todd Hanley said if La Feminista proves to be a success, it could join the hotel’s cocktail menu beyond year’s end. Another drink that debuted as a special and ended up as a fixture on the menu is the Ghost Orchid, made with ginger beer, Absolut Citron, Domaine de Canton, lemon and peach bitters.
