In what we hope is not a sign of things to come in the NCAA tournament, the Wing Madness No. 1 seeds got into trouble this week.

Overall No. 1 seed Wings Over Broadway and Bianchi’s Italian got into a back-and-forth that WOB eventually lost by about 150 votes (seeds were based on the restaurants’ number of nominations).

West-side favorite Bianchi’s advances to the semifinals to face the Wooden Nickel Tavern. The Wooden Nickel, which just celebrated its 30th year as a beloved neighborhood bar, beat Frankie’s South Philly Cheesesteaks in a close one.

On the other side of the bracket, No. 1 seed Wings and Rice lost a close matchup to Thunder Canyon Brewery, which started on the northwest side, and has now opened a downtown location.

Wings and Rice posted on Facebook on Monday, “We lost in Wing Madness, but the news is not all bad. Wildcats are in the Sweet Sixteen.”

Thunder Canyon will face Home Plate, a neighborhood bar with a twist — batting cages, which beat the only chain left in the competition, WingStop.
