Scottsdale-based Harkins Theaters announced Friday that it will reopen Tower Theatres in Marana on May 2 with the release of "Iron Man 3."

The company, which operates Harkins Theaters Tucson Spectrum 18 on the south side of Tucson, will extensively remodel the 6-year-old theater at 5755 W. Arizona Pavilions Drive, off Interstate 10 and Cortaro Road in Marana.

Planned upgrades include converting the theater to all-digital projection and sound, and wall-to-wall screens.

Tower Theatres closed last Thursday after its landlord, Larsen Baker, terminated its lease. Owner Kent Edwards said he and his business partners had been paying steeply reduced rent for three years as part of an ongoing bankruptcy that the partners filed in 2010 to avoid foreclosure.

Harkins also will introduce its loyalty programs that include a refillable cup and free popcorn with its loyalty T-shirt.

Harkins has been operating movie theaters in Arizona for 80 years. It calls itself the largest family-owned theater chain in the country, with more than 400 screens at theaters in Arizona, California, Colorado, Oklahoma and Texas.
