The Gypsy flamenco guitar-violin duo of Willie Royal and Wolfgang “Lobo” Fink will headline the Plaza Palomino Courtyard Concert Series tonight.
It’s Willie & Lobo’s first Tucson show together in a few years and one that promises to pick up right where they left off: exploiting musical exotica as interpreted by world-wise and weary gypsies.
The pair, who have been making interesting music together since hooking up in Mexico nearly three decades ago, draw influences from every corner of the globe.
The pair are in the middle of their reunion tour, which comes four years after they decided they preferred life on the beach to life on the road. Tucson’s Rhythm & Roots is bringing them to Tucson, where they have a devoted fan base for their music — a hypnotic blend of gypsy, flamenco, Middle Eastern, hot jazz, Cuban swing, tango and salsa. Their sound is far bigger than their two instruments, although if you close your eyes, your ears will tell you you’re hearing a full band.
Tonight's concert at Plaza Palomino, 2970 N. Swan Road, begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $27 in advance at at Antigone Books, 411 N. Fourth Ave.; all Bookmans locations; Grey Dog Trading Company in Plaza Palomino; or online at www.rhythmandroots.org. It’s $30 at the door. Details: 319-9966.
