Auditions begin this weekend for an upstart pop music program for girls.

Gurlie Pop, the brainchild of Kathi McKay of TimeHarmony Music studio, is aimed at girls in middle and high school who want to learn the fine art of pop singing.

The girls, split into groups of six to eight, will rehearse weekly, focusing on pop vocal stylings, harmony and performance.

McKay, who has been singing since she was a teen, said she is looking for girls with good singing voices, positive attitudes and teamwork skills. Musical knowledge is a plus but not a prerequisite, she said.

Participants will be chosen through an audition process, and the cost to be part of the group is $40 a month.

Auditions will be held throughout the summer beginning with Saturday at Sticks n' Strings Music Center, 8796 E. Broadway, from 3 to 5 p.m.

The auditions continue:

• 9 a.m. to noon May 24, Purple Heart Park at Rita Ranch, 10050 E. Rita Road.

• 2 to 4 p.m. June 22 at Bookmans, 6230 E. Speedway.

• 3 to 5 p.m. June 29, Sticks n' Strings.
