Beam’s art leads
to Beam in art

Sam Beam, the artist otherwise known as Iron & Wine, is used to playing venues like the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Being immortalized through art at the same venue is a different story.

That is where the Texas-based musician, or at least his likeness, found itself when the hall exhibited the works of British artist Joe Simpson in 2012.

Known for his figurative pieces, Simpson painted a lifelike portrait of Beam in 2011, as part of his Musician Portrait series.

Simpson’s painting of Beam was displayed in the venue’s ground-floor corridor, along with 21 other musicians, including Jamie Cullum and Ezra Koenig from Vampire Weekend.

Iron & Wine plays the Rialto Theatre, at 318 E. Congress St., Tuesday.

Tickets are $23-$40 through the Rialto box office, 740-1000.
