UCLA coach Jim Mora spent more than 20 seasons in the NFL as a defensive assistant . He used to coach Michael Vick. Mora knows what he and the Bruins are up against Saturday.

Arizona Wildcats quarterback Brandon Dawkins has rushed for 391 yards and seven touchdowns in three starts. His average of 130.33 rushing yards per game ranks second among Div. I FBS quarterbacks behind Louisville’s Lamar Jackson, the current front-runner for the Heisman Trophy.

“He puts huge stress on a defense,” Mora said of Dawkins. “He’s lightning fast, he’s quick, he’s decisive, he can break arm tackles. It’s almost like they’re in the ‘Wildcat’ every single play with a guy that can throw the ball.”

Dawkins has made strides as a passer since taking over for the injured Anu Solomon in Week 2. Dawkins has completed 61.7 percent of his throws with three touchdowns and one interception.

But it’s his running ability — his long, effortless stride — that literally separates him from others. He possesses all the attributes to become the next great dual-threat quarterback under Rich Rodriguez. Pat White and Denard Robinson had 1,000-plus-yard seasons in Rodriguez’s system at West Virginia and Michigan, respectively.

Dawkins has a different running style, but he is producing similar results. At his current pace, the redshirt sophomore would rush for more than 1,400 yards.

“They’re all kind of unique,” Rodriguez said. “Pat White was just take one step and boy, he’s full speed. Denard Robinson was a freak. (Before White) we had Rasheed Marshall, who’s probably most similar to Brandon. Kind of a longer strider, but was faster than you think.

“Brandon is faster than you think. I don’t know what his 40 time is, but once he gets going, he’s such a competitive runner, he can pull away from people.”

You don’t have to tell the Washington Huskies that. Dawkins rushed for a career-high 176 yards against UW, including a 79-yard touchdown. The TD marked the longest run by a quarterback this season and the longest by an Arizona QB since at least 1972.

“Anytime you have a running quarterback like that, it is really hard and frustrating,” Washington coach Chris Petersen said after the Huskies’ 35-28 overtime victory over the Wildcats. “The three guys that we played up to this point don’t run like he runs. … When a guy is that fast and you miss him, he makes you pay.”

Washington’s defense is loaded with pro prospects. After shaking linebacker Psalm Wooching in the backfield, Dawkins outran all of them down the right sideline. He covered the final 40 yards in less than 4.5 seconds.

“He makes it really tough,” Mora said. “The run that he had against the University of Washington, the best defense in this conference, arguably, or at least it was … was just spectacular. The guy, he’s big-time.”

Dawkins patterns himself after two of the greatest dual-threat QBs in history: Randall Cunningham and Cam Newton. Dawkins met Cunningham at a football camp and became friends with his son, also named Randall, who is a high jumper at USC. (The younger Cunningham played quarterback at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, where he was a teammate of Solomon’s.)

Like Cunningham and Newton, Dawkins (6-3, 210) is both big and fast. Because of his size and gait, he doesn’t look as speedy as smaller players such as White or Robinson.

But whatever he might lack in timed speed, Dawkins makes up for in determination. He’s always thinking about the end zone. Dawkins and White are the only Rodriguez-coached quarterbacks to score multiple rushing touchdowns in three straight games.

“It’s so hard to test how somebody really runs,” Dawkins said. “When the pressure’s on and somebody’s chasing after you, I feel like something in your body kicks in where you run a lot faster. When I had those guys chasing after me, I felt like I was just floating down the field, just rolling.”

New RB option

The Wildcats are turning to a veteran receiver to provide reinforcements for their depleted tailback corps.

Senior Samajie Grant is taking some reps at running back this week. Grant played the position at Colony High School in Ontario, California, rushing for 1,495 yards and 24 touchdowns as a senior in 2012.

Grant has started 33 games at receiver for Arizona. He has 134 career receptions, including 11 this season. He has seven career rushes for 30 yards.

“He’s just an explosive player,” Rodriguez said. “I’d like to get him some more touches anyway because he can do some things with the ball.”

Rodriguez and his staff have been forced to consider contingencies after ankle injuries to Nick Wilson and J.J. Taylor and the dismissal of Orlando Bradford.

Taylor probably will be out for the rest of the season after breaking his left ankle last week. Wilson’s status for UCLA is unknown. If he can’t play, Arizona likely will use some combination of Zach Green, Tyrell Johnson, walk-on Branden Leon and Grant.

Can Grant get up to speed by Saturday at a position he hasn’t played in several years?

“Samajie can do a little bit of everything,” running backs coach Calvin Magee said. “He’s a quick study. So he’ll pick it up.”

Extra points

• Receiver Shawn Poindexter injured his right foot or ankle against Washington after catching three passes for 29 yards in the first quarter. His status for this week’s game is unclear.

• Linebacker DeAndre’ Miller (ankle) had a green jersey Tuesday, possibly indicating limited practice participation. That could be a good sign after Miller missed last week’s game.

• Despite injuries piling up again, Rodriguez doesn’t plan to make any changes to Arizona’s training or practice regimens. “I have 100 percent confidence in our training methods,” he said. “It’s just bad luck.”

Arizona offensive lineman Zach Hemmila’s death last month resulted from the combined toxic effects of two prescription drugs, according to an autopsy report issued by the Pima County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday.

The drugs found in Hemmila’s system and cited as the cause of his death were oxymorphone, an opiate painkiller, and alprazolam, an anxiety medication.

Hemmila, 22, died in his sleep on Aug. 7 or 8. His death was ruled an accident.

“Several wads” of chewing tobacco were found in Hemmila’s mouth, according to the autopsy report. No intact pills were discovered in his gastrointestinal system. His lungs were “markedly congested,” per the report, which is dated Aug. 8.

Messages left with Dr. Gregory Hess, the Chief Medical Examiner of Pima County, were not returned.

Hemmila, a redshirt senior from Chandler, was set to be the Wildcats’ starting center this season. The team is honoring him throughout the season with helmet stickers and patches on coaches’ hats.

“Arizona Athletics continues to mourn the passing of Zach Hemmila,” the UA said in a statement released Tuesday afternoon. “We will honor the family’s request for privacy and support them in any way we can.”

The brand name for oxymorphone is Opana. Hemmila had a concentration of 15.3 nanograms per milliliter (ng/ml) in his system, according to the autopsy report. The recommended therapeutic range is 1-5 ng/ml, the autopsy report stated.

According to drugs.com, an independent medical information website, therapeutic range refers to the dosage “usually expected to achieve desired therapeutic effects. Some patients require doses (or concentrations) above or below this range. Some patients will experience drug toxicity within this range.”

Hemmila had 11.8 ng/ml of alprazolam in his system, near the bottom of the therapeutic range (11-40), the autopsy stated. The brand name for alprazolam is Xanax. Hemmila also had citalopram, an anti-depressant, in his system, according to the report. The concentration of citalopram was 31.3 ng/ml, also well within the therapeutic range (10-120), the report stated. The brand name for citalopram is Celexa.

On Aug. 31, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced it would require warning labels for nearly 400 products detailing the serious risks associated with combining certain opioid medications and depressant drugs called benzodiazepines. The risks include extreme sleepiness, respiratory depression, coma and death. Alprazolam is a benzodiazepine.

The Arizona Wildcats will have a new look in more ways than one during the 2016-17 season.

Already working six new players and replacing three starters, the Wildcats are scheduled to wear all-new Nike uniforms this season, in the standard white (home), blue (road), and red (road) sets.

While images of the new look are not available yet, UA basketball operations director Ryan Reynolds said they will feature the cut -- though not necessarily the design -- of the USA Basketball uniforms worn in Rio.

The USA Rio 2016 uniforms featured a V-like cut along the neckline, as well as a small V-shaped cut on the side of the shorts. Nike is redesigning several college teams with the look this season.

Reynolds said the new UA uniforms won't have stripes but will still have the traditional "CATS" lettering on the shorts.

Arizona last updated its uniforms shortly before the 2014-15 season with uniforms that incorporated some throwback features and, earlier, wore these starting in the middle of the 2010-11 season. Sean Miller's first UA team wore a plainer uniform in 2009-10.

Of course, there have also been several alternative and special occasion uniforms, too -- including the grey "Zona" ones of 2011-12 and the Hyper Elite Disruption reds they wore at Colorado last season. Reynolds said there could be two alternate uniforms this season.

The Wildcats hope to debut the uniforms during their annual preseason media day Thursday but Reynolds said they aren't sure if they will arrive in time.

Quick hitters from the Arizona Wildcats’ post-practice media availability Tuesday morning:

* UA coach Rich Rodriguez said senior receiver Samajie Grant is getting some reps at running back this week. Arizona is banged up at that position with J.J. Taylor likely out for the season and Nick Wilson’s status uncertain for UCLA because of ankle injuries.

* Grant played tailback in high school. “He’s just an explosive player,” Rodriguez said. “I’d like to get him some more touches anyway because he can do some things with the ball."

* Another Arizona RB option: walk-on Branden Leon. Said Rodriguez: "He’s a tough guy. He runs hard. He’s got some good skills. He’s really worked hard getting bigger, stronger and faster."

* Receiver Shawn Poindexter was on crutches with a boot on his right foot as he made his way from the practice field to the locker room. He got hurt against Washington after catching three passes for 29 yards in the first quarter.

* Linebacker DeAndre’ Miller (ankle) had a green jersey on, indicating limited practice participation. That could be a good sign after Miller missed last week’s game.

* Despite injuries piling up again, Rodriguez doesn't plan to make any changes to Arizona’s training or practice regimens. "I have 100 percent confidence in our training methods,” he said. “It’s just bad luck.”

* Rodriguez comparing UCLA's defense to Washington's: "Very similar. They might be a little faster on the edge. Their secondary is outstanding."

* Rodriguez on some of his past running QBs: "Pat White was just take one step and boy, he’s full speed. Denard Robinson was a freak." Brandon Dawkins looks like the next great running quarterback under Rodriguez, and I’ll have more on Dawkins’ running ability later today.

* Rodriguez on Dawkins' confidence/personality: "He’s a Snapchat/Instagram king. I’m sure he gets a lot of likes."

The Arizona Wildcats had big plans for diminutive tailback J.J. Taylor.

The 5-foot-6, 170-pound freshman already showed he could be an extremely effective every-down back, subbing for injured starter Nick Wilson. With both backs healthy, Rich Rodriguez intended to utilize them in two-tailback sets.

Now that Taylor is likely out for the season because of a broken left ankle, those plans have changed. And Arizona is scrambling to piece together a viable corps of running backs.

The situation is eerily reminiscent of what happened last season at middle linebacker, where one Wildcat after another went down.

“Injuries happen,” Rodriguez said Monday. “You don’t want it to all hit the same position.”

The first running back to get hurt was fullback Jamardre Cobb, who injured his knee in Week 2 against Grambling State. Four days later, tailback Orlando Bradford — listed as a co-starter on the depth chart — was dismissed from the program.

Wilson started the Hawaii game but exited after the first series because of a sprained ankle. He did not suit up against Washington, and his status is unknown for Saturday’s game at UCLA.

Taylor replaced Wilson and excelled. Taylor rushed for 168 yards against the Rainbow Warriors and 97 against the Huskies before suffering an injury that “more than likely” will sideline him for the season, Rodriguez said.

If Wilson is able to play, the Wildcats can run their entire offense. They had no restrictions with Taylor either, despite his being a true freshman.

“J.J. was a really sharp guy – is a sharp guy,” Rodriguez said. “Every week we were going to do more and more with him. But now we’ve got to go back to Step 1 a little bit.

“We’ll adjust. Those things happen in the game. We’ll have 11 when we go out there, I hope.”

Arizona can’t use its entire offensive arsenal with less-experienced backs in the lineup. If Wilson can’t play Saturday, the likely tandem will be Tyrell Johnson and Zach Green. They combined for 35 yards on 11 carries against Washington.

Johnson began the season as a slot receiver. Although he has a background at tailback and practiced there during the week, he looked rusty against the Huskies. Johnson fumbled twice, losing one of them.

“He hasn’t gotten a lot of reps,” Rodriguez said. “He hasn’t gotten hit a lot.”

Rodriguez said Johnson needs to work on “everything at the position – where to press blocks, ball security, blocking. There’s all kinds of stuff.”

Arizona is high on walk-on Branden Leon, a redshirt freshman who could be in the mix Saturday. Rodriguez said the coaching staff is discussing additional alternatives. Other players with tailback backgrounds include receiver Samajie Grant and safety Anthony Mariscal.

Taylor’s ‘bad luck’

Could Taylor’s injury have been prevented?

“At the time I thought so,” Rodriguez said. “I’m saying to myself, ‘Blow the whistle, blow the whistle.’ It’s just bad luck.”

Taylor’s injury happened on a play late in the third quarter where his forward progress had been stopped. The officials might have blown the whistle a second late. By then, 318-pound UW defensive tackle Greg Gaines and others had driven Taylor into the ground.

Rodriguez described Taylor as a “special talent” and a “very tough individual.”

“More than anything, you just feel bad for him,” Rodriguez said. “He will be back at 100 percent and be even better. But right now it stings.”

No second thoughts

Rodriguez further explained his decision to eschew a two-point conversion at the end of regulation Saturday.

Arizona scored with 17 seconds remaining to make the score 28-27. Rodriguez immediately sent out the extra-point team.

“I’ve been in a few overtime games,” he said. “I believe in getting to that point — trust your team that you’ll win it in overtime.”

Rodriguez said it wouldn’t matter if the Wildcats had been on the road or whether he sensed they were fatigued. “I feel confident going into overtime that we’ll be able to pull it out,” he said.

Arizona lost, 35-28.

Earlier in the game, Rodriguez went for six on fourth-and-goal from the UW 2-yard line. The Wildcats didn’t make it. He didn’t consider that move nearly as big a gamble.

“I’d go for it again, 100 percent,” Rodriguez said. “I wouldn’t think twice about the decision to go for it. I’d call a better play. They got in a defense that’s hard to run that particular play against. Hindsight’s pretty good at this point.”

In terms of timing, it didn’t feel like much of a coincidence.

By May, safety Rhedi Short had already been verbally committed to UCLA for seven months. On May 7, he visited the UA for a Junior Day event, along with his Cathedral (Los Angeles) High School teammate Hunter Echols, a four-star safety and then-UCLA commit who has since flipped to USC.

On May 8, Short announced he was backing out of his UCLA commitment and reopening his recruitment.

A few weeks later, he released a list of his top five schools: Arizona, Oregon, Penn State, Arizona State and California.

Finally, Short announced his verbal commitment to Arizona’s 2017 class in early July.

So was it just a coincidence that Short decommitted from UCLA just after a visit to Tucson, only to commit to Arizona not too long after?

Short insists it really was just a coincidence.

“Actually, I was already planning on decommitting before I went out there,” Short said, “but it just worked out that I decomitted after.”

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter — Short was a recruiting coup for Arizona’s rising 2017 class. Short, rated three-stars by Scout.com, picked the UA over offers from programs like Oregon and UCLA, who the Wildcats will face in Los Angeles on Saturday night.

“The biggest thing is I was most comfortable there,” Short said about Arizona. “So when I was up there, and I was talking to everybody, it just felt like home.”

Short, listed at 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds, was the 20th recruit to commit to Arizona’s 2017 class in a wave of summer recruitments. The class has since ballooned to 26 players and is currently ranked as the No. 1 2017 class in the Pac-12 by Scout.

“Yeah it’s crazy, it’s really crazy. It’s really cool that I’m a part of it,” Short said. “We have a group chat, we talk every day. We’re all happy we decided and we can’t wait to get out there …

“With everybody that’s in my class, it just seems like it’s gonna be a lot of fun and a great experience.”

Although Short was swayed away from UCLA, he said he’s happy with his decision to become a Wildcat.

“I haven’t doubted it one bit,” Short said. “I’ve been happy throughout the couple of months I’ve been committed, so that’s been good.”

Burmeister breaking records in San Diego

There might not be an Arizona commit having a better season right now than senior quarterback Braxton Burmeister of La Jolla (California) Country Day.

On Sept. 16, he set a new record for career total yards.

He also has 95 career touchdown passes after throwing for four more last week.

He needs just one more passing touchdown to tie the CIF San Diego Section record.

So far this season, Burmeister has thrown just one interception in 202 pass attempts, collecting 1,675 passing yards and 21 touchdowns to go with 383 rushing yards and seven more touchdowns.

For his career, he’s amassed 11,019 total yards.

“It’s definitely an awesome feeling,” Burmeister told San Diego Community News Group.

“I have to pretty much give all the credit to the players and coaches around me. They have made it possible for me to be successful.”

Burmeister is expected to take an official visit to Arizona’s campus sometime this season, most likely for the USC game on Oct. 15.

Quick hitters from the Arizona Wildcats’ weekly news conference Monday afternoon at the Lowell-Stevens Football Facility:

* UA coach Rich Rodriguez said freshman tailback J.J. Taylor “more than likely” is out for the season after suffering a broken left ankle against Washington on Saturday night. Rodriguez described Taylor as a “special talent.”

* Rodriguez said all the injuries at running back have forced Arizona to scale back the playbook. I’ll have more on this topic later.

* Rodriguez defended his decision to eschew a two-point conversion at the end of regulation, saying he trusted his team to win in overtime.

* Rodriguez said he didn’t make a big deal out of Trey Griffey’s downfield block on Brandon Dawkins’ 79-yard touchdown run because that’s the way the Wildcats are expected to play all the time.

* Rodriguez said Dawkins wasn’t quite as sharp against Washington as he was against Hawaii but that his running ability provided a “big lift.”

* Rodriguez was impressed with UCLA’s physicality against Stanford. The Bruins were leading the Cardinal until the final minute, when Stanford rallied. Rodriguez is 0-4 against UCLA and conceded that “we’ve not played well against them.”

* Rodriguez said Arizona is using “11” personnel (one running back, one tight end, three wide receivers) about 60 percent of the time and is happy with the present and future at the tight end position.

* Rodriguez likes how resilient and scrappy the defense has been, but he’s still seeking more three-and-outs. Arizona is last in the Pac-12 in third-down defense.

* Rodriguez said he trusts Nate Phillips “100 percent” as a punt returner despite Phillips’ ill-advised attempt to field a bouncing punt Saturday, resulting in a fumble. “I don’t think you’ll see Nate make that mistake again,” Rodriguez said.

* Rodriguez attributed Shun Brown’s recent production to him being open more than other receivers. Brown has 12 catches for 206 yards and a touchdown in the past two games.

* Rodriguez indicated that receiver Shawn Poindexter got banged up during the game. Poindexter had three catches for 29 yards, all in the first quarter.

* Despite some errant snaps against Washington, Rodriguez said redshirt-freshman center Nathan Eldridge has done a good job in his first time as a starter. The poor snap at the end “did kind of discombobulate the whole play,” Rodriguez said.
