NASA's Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) obtained this image of the spiral galaxy M74 during the Astro-1 mission of Space Shuttle Columbia, December 2-11, 1990. The photograph - made in ultraviolet light which is blocked from the view of telescopes on the ground by the Earth's atmosphere - reveals young regions of intense star formation or stellar nurseries in the galaxy.
