Col. (USAF-Ret.) James A. Marr

cherished husband of Mary Catherine, passed peacefully in Tucson on the morning of July 16, 2013. Col. Marr was born on September 23, 1921 in Summersville, KY to Mr. and Mrs. Alvet H. Marr. He was raised in Louisville, where he met his partner-for-life, Mary Catherine Seyller, whom he married on September 26, 1942. Entering the Army Air Corps that year, Col. Marr attended Officer Training School and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. He served his country as a navigator and command pilot in WWII, flying missions in the Pacific Theater. He also served during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. Col. Marr's flying experience included B-29, KC-97, B-47 and B-52 aircraft, and he flew 34 combat missions. Col. Marr's career in the Air Force spanned 30 years. His many assignments included Chief, Operations Plans Division, HQ, 8th Air Force, Westover AFB, MA; Vice-Commander, Hq, 19th Bomb Wing, Homestead AFB, FL; Chief, National Emergency Airborne Command Post, Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Washington, DC; and Base Commander, K.I. Sawyer AFB, MI and Dyess AFB, TX. Among his awards were the Legion of Merit with Oak Leave Cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, Joint Chiefs of Staff Badge, Combat Aviators Badge and the French Pilot Badge. Upon retiring from the Air Force in 1972, Col. and Mrs. Marr returned to Tucson, where they enjoyed many years filled with wonderful friendships and pursuing their passion for golf. During this time, Col. Marr served as the Manager of Municipal Golf Courses for the City of Tucson. Col. Marr was predeceased by his parents, sister, May Schott- Von Allmen of Louisville, KY and grandson, Joey K. Marr of Chesterfield, VA. In addition to his wife, left to remember Col. Marr with love are his sister, Geneva Jones of Louisville, KY; daughter, Sandra A. Wright and husband, Paul of Apex, NC; son, James D. Marr and wife, Kim of Chesterfield, VA; grandsons, Eric Wright and wife, Lisa of Plano, TX, Sean Wright and wife, Kristy of Amarillo, TX, Ryan Wright and wife, Kelli of Fuquay-Varina, NC; granddaughters, Jessica L. Marr of Lexington, KY, Johanna M. Marr of McLean, VA; great-grandchildren, Trevor Wright, Kylee Wright, Caden Wright and Stella Wright and many other dear relatives and friends. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., Sunday, July 21, 2013, at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway. As Col.
