Donald R. Miller

Don Miller was born on July 29, 1928 in Robinson, Illinois to Cyrus A. L. and Martha Emaline Highsmith Miller. A resident of Tucson, Arizona for more than 37 years, Don retired from Acme Steel Company in Riverdale, IL in 1976 after 30 years of service where he was employed as an electrician. Don was hired by Acme Steel after graduating from Fenger High School in Chicago, IL in 1947. Don joined the U.S. Air Force on May 9, 1950 and served till May 8, 1954 in the 43Rd Air Refueling Squadron and the 43Rd Bomb Wing. Don volunteered for service in Korea but was assigned to aircraft mechanic school at Sheppard AFB. While in the service Don was stationed at Lackland AFB, Sheppard AFB, Chanute AFB, and Davis-Monthan AFB. While on duty, Don visited England, Scotland, Germany, France, Ireland, Azors, Bermuda, Mexico, and Canada, where he survived a crash-landing at Harmon AFB in Newfoundland when his aircraft flipped on touchdown in heavy snow, destroying the B 50 Superfortress. Don is survived by his wife, Kathleen Ruth Laffoon Miller, of 54 years; nieces, Elizabeth Meeks-Hornback, Pamela McElveen, Margot Perkins and nephews, Kyle Laffoon, Philip Meeks, Stephen Meeks, Mark Meeks, Jim Aten, Robert T. Miller, Robert Anderson and Albert Anderson. Don was an avid outdoorsman and wildlife advocate. He was a member of the Arizona Hiking Club, a trustee of SOAR and managed his property in Tucson as a wildlife habitat. Memorial Visitation will be held on Friday, April 18, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway Blvd., and Memorial Service Saturday, April 19, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial preferred to Agape Hospice, 2980 N. Swan Road, #222, Tucson, AZ 85712.
