Helen Sally Mautner

passed away at home July 23, 2014 after a long illness with cancer. She leaves her son, Christopher; daughter, Alisa; son-in-law, William "BJ" Cameron; grandson, Zane and brother, Morton Gluck. She was married for almost 50 years to Robert Mautner until his passing in 2004. They also lost a son, Erik, in 1987. Helen was born in Chicago in 1930 and lived, studied, and worked in California, New York, and Mexico before moving to Tucson in 1965 where she and Robert raised their family. Helen was passionately involved in the struggle for basic human rights and social justice. She was Tucson's voice for civil liberties as the Southern Arizona Chapter Director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and also chaired the People with AIDS Coalition. She was a board member of the Children's Action Alliance, served on the executive council of the University of Arizona Retirees Association, the Tucson Police Citizens Review Board, the Arizona Superior Court Judicial Review Committee, and the City of Tucson Magistrate Selection Committee. In 1997, Helen retired from the University of Arizona as Assistant Director of the Affirmative Action Office. Recently, she volunteered with the Primavera Foundation for the homeless and the Friends of the Pima County Public Library. Always a champion for the marginalized and vulnerable, seeking justice and humanity for all, Helen dedicated her life to the ideal of equity and equality, and also made time for many people from different walks of life. She took great joy in traveling around the world with her family and was a longstanding supporter of the arts. In lieu of flowers, Helen asked that if you feel a hole that needs to be filled, you could fill it through one of her many "causes": Planned Parenthood; The Arizona Civil Liberties Union; The World Wildlife Foundation and Public Broadcasting Station/ National Public Radio. A remembrance of Helen's life and achievements will be held on Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at the Tucson Botanical Gardens from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Arrangements by FUNERARIA DEL ANGEL.
