Jean Claire James

was lovingly cared for by Santa Rita Hospice before joining her family on March 16, 2013. Jean was born January 27, 1930 in Canandaigua, New York to Lynn and Kathryn Reubens Carr. She graduated from Southside High School, Elmira, NY in 1947. Jean joined the WAVES, Women of the United States Navy where she met and married her enlisted husband, Charles Lee James. Their children were born abroad in Bremerhaven, Germany. The family was also stationed in Puerto Rico, England, the Azores Islands, Alaska and Canada. After the kids were grown, Jean and Charles settled in Arlington, Virginia. Jean developed an interest in Duplicate Bridge, a game which would become her life-long passion and earned the requisite points playing Bridge to become a Silver Life Master. Jean retired to Green Valley in 2004 where she relished the weather, good neighbors and the opportunity to play bridge at Green Valley Recreation. She credited the tough strategy of the game with her swift recovery from a series of strokes. She faced other health challenges in her life with independence, dignity and grace. Predeceased was her husband, Charles (1997); son, Samuel (1998) and brother, Donald (2010). Jean is survived by daughter, Valarie James; sister-in-law, Theresa Carr; nieces and nephews, Sharon, Dennis, Cathy, and Denise; Goddaughters, Mayra and Olyvia Vale; grandchildren, Seth, Spencer and Samara; many great-grandchildren and her beloved Bichon, Lulu. Jean will be dearly missed by family, friends and bridge partners. There will be an open Memorial gathering at Friends Indeed in Green Valley on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Friends Indeed will be gratefully accepted at the Memorial or sent to: 301 Camino Casa Verde, Green Valley, AZ 85614. Arrangements by GREEN VALLEY MORTUARY.
