Ruby May James

11/13/1924 2/27/2014

Ruby May James, our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2014. An identical twin, Ruby and her sister Ruth Ellen were born to Dr. Theophil and Etelka Buehrer on November 13, 1924 at the old Stork's Nest in Tucson, AZ. Ruby attended Tucson High School and graduated with honors from the University of Arizona. While attending college, she met handsome Private First Class Hubert "Hugh" James. They were married in Des Moines, IA on April 7, 1945. The coupled lived in Tucson, where Hugh began his career as a junior high school math teacher with Tucson Unified School District #1. They were devout members of First United Methodist Church, where they made lifelong friends through the "Serlotru" young couples group. In 1949, daughter Judi was born. A devoted mother, Ruby postponed her own career in order to stay at home to raise their daughter. When Judi graduated from the U of A in 1970, Ruby immediately returned to the U of A to achieve her Masters of Education (M.Ed.) in Library Science. For more than 15 years, Ruby served as the head librarian at numerous schools within the TUSD #1, ultimately retiring from Smith School, located at Davis Monthan AFB. Hubert and Ruby celebrated 62 devoted years of marriage, until Hugh's passing in 2006. Ruby was a member of P.E.O. / Chapter E; Delta Kappa Gamma / Lambda Chapter; Entre Nous; and listed in Who's Who in America, as well as Who's Who in American Women. She was an honorary lifetime member of the Southwest Women's Charitable Organization (formerly Suburban Women's Club); Skyline Women's Club and the Tucson Symphony Guild. Ruby's greatest pride was her family. She loved to entertain. An accomplished artist, talented chef, gifted joke and story teller, Ruby loved to make people laugh. She was truly one of a kind never forgetting a birthday, always caring for those in need and truly making everyone around her feel special. Ruby loved life; her passion, enthusiasm, smile and laugh were contagious. She reinforced in each of us the importance of God, family, education, hard work, details, perseverance and laughter. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Judi and David Victor (Phoenix); three grandchildren, David (San Diego), Laurie (New South Wales, Australia) and Andrew Victor (Phoenix); four great-grandchildren, Eero and Apple (San Diego), Jacob and Jack (Phoenix), numerous cousins, an extended family and many loving friends. A Celebration of the Life of Ruby James will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at First united Methodist Church, 915 East Fourth Street in Tucson, AZ.
