RUSKIN, Esther Marie O'Toole, age 84, of Mesa, passed away on September 29, 2013 in the peaceful company of her family. " Sis", as she was affectionately known by her family and childhood friends was born, raised and educated in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. She received her degree in nutrition from Carlow University, in 1951. She then served in the U.S. Public Health Service, as a therapeutic dietitian. In 1952, she married and started a family. In her early thirties, she developed a severe asthmatic condition necessitating that the family move to the drier climate of the Phoenix area. It was there that she raised her five children and returned to work, as a hospital dietitian, to help support them. After retiring in her mid-sixties, she lived in Tucson where she continued to volunteer for several entities, traveled extensively, hiked, and spent lots of time with her children and grandchildren. She was known for her adventurous spirit, spontaneity and a jovial Irish wit. She is survived by her children, Dr. Richard J. Ruskin (Helen), Mesa, Ms. Mary Jo Curtis, Gainesville, VA, Mr. Daniel F. Ruskin Jr., Scottsdale and Mrs. Suzanne Bustamante (Mark), Phoenix. She has seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. She is preceded in death by her son, Christopher and her brothers, Thomas P., Joseph and Jack O'Toole. Mass will be held at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 11300 N. 64th St., Scottsdale, at 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 4, 2013. A private burial service will be later that afternoon at St. Francis Cemetery, in Phoenix. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association or a local hospice organization.
